What it is
A block plane is a small hand plane for trimming end grain and fine edges; a jack plane is longer, used for general smoothing and straightening of boards. Both shave thin layers of wood.
Typical uses
They are used in carpentry and joinery, for fitting doors, smoothing boards, trimming to size and taking off saw marks.
When you enquire
Tell us which type you need and the woods you plane.
Care and handling
Keep the iron sharp and set the depth of cut fine, and back the blade off when the plane is stored so it does not dull. Wipe the sole and iron with a little oil, and avoid planing wood with nails or grit in it.
