Spade
What it is
A spade is a digging tool with a flat, straight-edged blade on a handle, used to cut into the ground and lift soil. The straight edge makes clean trench walls.
Typical uses
It is used for digging planting holes, edging beds, cutting turf, moving soil and digging drainage channels on farms and in gardens.
When you enquire
Tell us the blade width and handle style, for example a D-grip or a straight handle.
Care and handling
Clean the blade after digging and dry it, then rub on a little oil to keep rust away. Keep the edge sharp with a file, check the handle joint, and dig with your legs rather than levering hard on the shaft.
